Two years ago today, I was walking down the aisle toward my happily ever after.
We were married on a beautiful, sunny afternoon.
Michael’s uncle served as our minister, getting ordained just to perform our ceremony.
We made a grand exit on a fire truck.
Oh yeah…and my husband had a broken leg.
But nothing can keep a good man down.
He made it through most of our ceremony without his crutches.
He even danced at the reception until he couldn’t dance anymore!
We both had such a blast at our wedding – like couples should!
The love of family and friends that surrounded us on that special day was incomparable.
In these two years of marriage, we have experienced some really great times together,
like becoming parents.
We have also experienced some very frightening moments,
like my relapses.
But we have each other to lean on, and that makes the bad times more bearable
and the good times even better!
As I was writing this, the tips that Uncle John gave us for a happy marriage came to mind.
Whether you’ve been married for 1 year or 61 years, these words ring true for all of us.
Uncle John’s Advice for a Happy Marriage:
5 – Don’t sweat the small stuff. Nobody’s perfect. Let it go.
Love bears all things, and endures all things.
4 – Remember all that small stuff we’re not going to worry about? Forget it. Forgive and forget.
Love is patient, love is kind, it is not arrogant or rude.
3 – Use the magic words: I love you. Thank you. You are right. Forgive me. You are smart. I’m sorry. Please. I agree completely. You are beautiful. I was wrong. You have my support. I forgive you.
I’m glad I married you.
A gentle tongue is a tree of life.
2 – The realization that it’s not about you. Happiness and joy belong to those who put the focus of their lives on something or someone other than themselves. Getting over yourself means calling on a sense of humility and humility is excellent in a marriage. And for a truly happy marriage, it is a necessity.
When pride comes in, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
1 – Put God first. God has given us all free will, which allows us to make our own choices. God has designed us and knows what will increase our happiness. And He has told us how to increase it – mainly by getting over ourselves and following the leader in Christ. Putting God first and living according to His word, therefore making better choices – choices that really do lead to happiness.
As I write this, I am reminded of a moment during our reception.
But I am a lucky woman.
I am lucky to have a man who loves me so much that he will stand by me in my darkest hour.
A man who loves me so much that he overlooks all of my flaws and puts up with my crazy antics
but loves me anyway.
I am lucky to have such a great man as my husband and the father of our daughter.
I truly am the lucky one.
Happy 2nd Anniversary, babe.
May we celebrate many, many more!
